Rebuilding Resilient Communities: Engaging Men for Gender Justice

A Five-day Online Training Programme on Gender Equality, Men and Masculinity

(February 8 – 12, 2021)

Organised by MITRA (Men’s Initiatives for Transforming Relationships Through Action)

Context:  The Covid 19 pandemic has changed our lives in many deeply distressing ways. The infection has affected millions and thousands of lives have been lost. Millions lost their livelihoods during the lockdown and the economy has still not recovered. Women have had to face a disproportionate burden of the many disruptions that have been caused by this pandemic. Women’s groups have noted an increase domestic violence. Incidence of child marriage has spiked. In many cases men who returned home during the lockdown are still at home and relationships in the family and community have changed. There have been reports of suicides among men as men too are unable to cope with the many changes in their lives.

It is well known that gender inequality affects the recovery and rehabilitation process from disasters. As communities move towards the recovery phase of the current Covid 19 pandemic it is important to be vigilant that the opportunities are fair, and contributions are equitable in the community. An awareness of the possibilities of heightened gender disparity during the rehabilitation process is extremely important for rebuilding gender just and resilient communities. This approach needs to include men and boys and incorporate an understanding of masculinities in order that men and boys can play a creative and positive role in this process of recovery.

Many NGOs have played a crucial role in the relief processes during the lockdown and continue to provide support for rehabilitation and recovery.
